Birds

31/10/24 In the Area 10 Car park field a Fieldfare was seen in the hedgerow by Nick Kightley .

26/10/24 2 Swallow were seen heading South from the Dinton Activty Centre by David Rimes and 2 Siskin were in the small copse at Lavell’s Lake Car Park Field seen by Tim James.

25/10/24 4 Chiffchaff were heard calling on the Emm Brook in Area 10 between the Dinton Activty Centre and the Duck feeding Area by David Rimes.

23/10/24   Kingfisher The morning was spent wandering around Area 10 at Dinton Pastures. Following the recent rains Lavells Lake was pretty full however at the feeding area a Kingfisher sat in the bushes and a Nuthatch popped down to the feeders.2 Swallow were flying around Lavells Lake before continuinng South.   Nuthatch In Area 4 seen by Paul Bright-Thomas were a Firecrest , Mistle Thrush, Lesser Redpoll Skylark and a Kingfisher was heard flying up the Emm Brook.

22/10/24 In Area 4 a Bullfinch flew low over Paul Bright-Thomas's garden calling . In Area 7A at Copsewood Balancing Pond a Chiffchaff and a Male and Female Stonchat were seen by Paul O'Neill. In Area 10 there were 2 late Swallow flying around Lavells Lake this evening seen by Michael Hubbard.

21/10/24 2 very vocal Firecrest were beside the path on east side of the Dinton Activity Centre carpark in Area 10 seen by Roger Stansfield, at the Old Golf Course a Mistle Thrush and Great Spotted Woodpecker were together in the tallest tree also seen by Roger Stansfield.

19/10/24 In Area 10 Fraser Cottington saw 30 Redwing heading South and David Rimes saw a Firecrest along the Emm Brook south of the Activity Centre.

17/10/24 Flying over Paul Bright-Thomas's Area 4 garden this morning were 19 Ring necked Parakeets probably leaving a local roost. In Area 7A, 2 Stonechat were seen at the Copsewood Balancing pond by Paul O'Neill also a Grey Wagtail , Skylark and 2 Stonechat were seen at Ashridge Meadows.

16/10/24 Seen in Area 7A by Paul O'Neill were a flock of 38 Redwing heading NW>SE over Old Forest Road Meadows and at Ashridge Meadows a male Reed Bunting a female Kestrel and 2 Stonchat In Area 4 the Yellow-browed Warbler was heard again calling from riverside trees . In Area 10 at the Lavells Car Park field 4 Common Redpoll were in the large Hawthorne tree , 50 Redwing and a Meadow Pipit were seen by Nick Kightley.

14/10/24 Through my Area 4 garden this morning after the rain was a feeding flock of Long tailed Tit with at least 1 Chiffchaff .

13/10/24 In Paul Bright-Thomas's Area 4 garden this morning was a Yellow-browed Warbler also seen flying South East were 10 Linnett .

11/10/24 At Copsewood Balancing pond in Area 7A Paul O'Neill saw a Cormorrant , Green Woodpecker and 2 female Stonechat .

10/10/24 A male Stonechat 16 Meadow Pipit and 2 Stonechat were seen at Copsewood Balancing pond in Area 7A by Paul O'Neill. at Ashridge Meadows. In Area 7A, 4 male and female Stonechat were seen at Ashridge Meadows by Paul O'Neill. at Ashridge Meadows.

06/10/24 In Area 10 at Black Swan Lake a 100+ House Martin were seen over heading south east< by Fraser Cottington. a Grey Heron , 10 Tufted Duck .a Kingfisher flying fast across the lake , a Little Grebe 7 Cormorrant and 10 Little Egret .

05/10/24 During the litter pick in Area 5 calling Chiffchaff and a Green Woodpecker were heard. At Ashridge Meadows in Area 7A a male Sparrowhawk being mobbed by 20+ Goldfinch , 2 Stonechat and 2 Grey Wagtail were seen by Paul O'Neill.

03/10/24 In the Lavell’s Lake Car Park Field in Area 10 were Chiffchaff and Blackcap in a large Tit flock moving through the bushes. A Swallow also flew over seen by Nick Kightley.

02/10/24 At Ashridge Meadows in Area 7A a female Kestrel and 2 female Stonechat were seen by Paul O'Neill.

01/10/24 Patrick Crowley was casting his eye over Heathlake in Area 1 and saw Great crested Grebe , 5 Mute Swan 2 adult and 3 juvenille, a Grey Heron , 5 Egyptian Goose 2 adult and 3 juvenille, 10 Tufted Duck , 3 Shoveler 2 males still in partial eclipse and 1 female.A Kingfisher flew across the lake with a small fish that it eat on a branch in a lakeside bush. In Area 10 at the Lavell’s Car Park Field a Blackcap was seen by Nick Kightley and a Grey Wagtail seen by Dan Forder.

Insects

29/10/24 Blair's Mocha With a really mild night forcast and reports of Bats flying at dusk at Dinton the moth trap was out at dusk on 28/10/24 in my Area 4 garden and emptied this morning . A good catchof 18 moths of 8 species. Highlight was a Blair's Mocha Cyclophora puppillaria new for the year .This is a continental species, and is only a rare immigrant to the British Isles. With 1 new moth added ,the total for 2024 is now 230 species.Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

27/10/24   The Chestnut The moth trap was out again at dusk on 26/10/24 in my Area 4 garden and emptied this morning .Single figure temperatures overnight reduced the catch to 2 moths of 2 species. Highlight was a The Chestnut Conistra vaccinii new for the year . With 1 new moth added ,the total for 2024 is now 229 species.Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

26/10/24  Feathered Thorn The patio light was left on in my Area 4 garden over night on the 25th . On the wall this morning was a Feathered Thorn Colotois pennaria new for the year and a Merveille du Jour Dichonia aprilina . With 1 new moth added ,the total for 2024 is 228 species.Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

24/10/24  November Moth The moth trap was out again at dusk on 23/10/24 in my Area 4 garden and emptied this morning . The catch was 5 moths of 4 species. Highlight was a November Moth Epirrita dilutata new for the year . With 1 new moth added ,the total for 2024 is now 227 species.Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

21/10/24  Orange Sallow Despite my better judgement the moth trap was out again at dusk on 20/10/24 in my Area 4 garden and emptied this morning . The catch was 7 moths of 6 species. Highlight was a Orange Sallow Tiliacea citrago new for the year . With 1 new moth' added ,the total for 2024 is now 226 species.Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

18/10/24 The moth trap was out again at dusk on 17/10/24 in my Area 4 garden and emptied this morning . The catch was only 2 moths of 2 species. It consisted of a Red-Green Carpet Chloroclysta siterata and a Light Brown Apple Moth Epiphyas postvittana . With no new moth's added ,the total for 2024 is still 225 species.Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released. I believe that the time may have come to resign the moth trap to the garden shed for the year.

15/10/24  Southern Wood Ant nests Wandering through Gorrick Woods in Area 1 and noticed several Southern Wood Ant Formica rufa nests Wood ant nests are large and conspicuous, so the species is relatively easy to find in dome-shaped mounds of grass, twigs, or conifer needles that have been collected by the ants. There may be up to 400,000 individuals in a nest and occasionally, several nests may be interconnected, forming a large colony.

14/10/24 The moth trap was out again at dusk on 13/10/24 in my Area 4 garden and emptied this morning . The catch was only 6 moths of 2 species. It consisted of 3 Black Rustic Aporophyla nigra and 3 Large Yellow Underwing Noctua pronuba . With no new moth's added ,the total for 2024 is still 225 species.Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

13/10/24 Black Rustic The patio light was left on in my Area 4 garden over night . On the wall this morning was a Black Rustic Aporophyla nigra new for the year. With 1 new moth added ,the total for 2024 is 225 species.Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.  Tipula confusa Also on the wall was the Cranefly Tipula confusa . One of the smaller craneflies with marbled dark and pale patches on wings, which are held in line with the body at rest.

12/10/24 Merveille du Jour  After a few days away in Norfolk, it was good to get back and put the moth trap out again at dusk on 11/10/24 in my Area 4 garden and empty it this morning . The catch was a meagre 6 moths of 5 species. However the highlight's were Merveille du Jour Dichonia aprilina new for the year. Merveille du Jour means “Wonder of the Day” in French. These moths rest on lichen during the day, perfectly camouflaged by the beautiful pattern on their wings. and 2 Red Green Carpet Chloroclysta siterata .  Red -Green Carpet  With 1 new moth added ,the total for 2024 is 224 species.Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

04/10/24  European Hornet My morning was spent in Area 7 with a group of Wave Rangers from Emmbrook Infant School. The chilly start gave way to a lovely sunny morning and a good time was had by all.Seen during our wanderings were  Dock Bug numerous Speckled Wood Helicoverpa armigera butterfly , several European Hornet Vespa crabo and a lot of Dock Bug Coreus marginatus a squash bug. Also seen were 2 Meadow Grasshopper Chorthippus parallelus and a male and female Common Darter Sympetrum striolatum dragonfly.

03/10/24 Scarce Bordered Straw The moth trap was out again at dusk on 02/10/24 in my Area 4 garden and emptied this morning . The catch was once again a reasonable 18 moths of 10 species. The highlight's were a Scarce Bordered Straw Helicoverpa armigera an immigrant species to Britain and Pale Mottled Willow Paradrina clavipalpis .  Pale Mottled Willow With 2 new moth's added ,the total for 2024 is 223 species.Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released. Red Admiral In the afternoon sun a Red Admiral Vanessa atalanta and a Speckled Wood Helicoverpa armigera butterfly visited my garden. Speckled Wood  Both building up reserves before the arrival of winter.

01/10/24 Barred Sallow A dry night was predicted so the moth trap was out again at dusk on 30/09/24 in my Area 4 garden and emptied this morning . The catch was a reasonable 16 moths of 9 species. The highlight was a Barred Sallow Tiliacea aurago .An attractive moth with red-brown wings that are crossed by a thick band of golden yellow. With 1 new moth added ,the total for 2024 is 221 species.Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

Plants/ Trees

At this time of year the leaves on the trees and hedgerows start to change colour to a yellowey gold, find out why at Why do leaves change colour .

05/10/24  Chicory Still just about hanging on in the wildflower area in the central reservation of the Spine Road in Area 5 is  Cyclamen Chicory Tiliacea aurago also in the central reservation was Cyclamen Tiliacea aurago

Fungi

Do not eat any fungi that have not been properly identified , some are DEADLY when ingested .

15/10/24  Common Earthball During a walk around Gorrick Woods in Area 1, what looks like a "Warty Potato " but is in fact Common Earthball Scleroderma citrinum was seen. These fungi are normally associated with Oak trees, when mature, the outer skin ruptures, creating a large, irregular opening which releases the spores which are then dispersed by wind and rain.

05/10/24  Larch Bolete Seen in the central reservation of the Spine Road in Area 5 during the litter pick is what I believe to be Larch Bolete Suillus grevilles .

29/10/24 With the current spell of mild weather a small unidentified bat species was seen flying around in Area 10 by Peter Scudamore.
